This painting came out of a time of a lot of endings—and new beginnings.
I started the first panel about a year ago in California as a commission. It was finished, but for various reasons, it never ended up finding its way to its intended home. So I packed it up and brought it with me when I moved across the country to North Carolina.
A little while later, I started a second panel. I began developing the two pieces side by side, sometimes wondering if they might eventually become one work, and other times letting them exist on their own.
As I continued working, they started to speak to each other. What began as one painting slowly became a diptych—two separate pieces with their own lives, but somehow connected.
In a lot of ways, the work started reflecting what I was moving through myself—grief, heartbreak, change, letting go, and figuring out what comes next.
I’ve also been thinking a lot about shan shui, the Chinese tradition of landscape painting—mountains and water, stillness and movement, permanence and change. There’s something about these two panels, and especially the space between them, that feels connected to that idea.
